Women of the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC)

OnSide Victoria’s Chair Patrizia Torelli has been working closely with the Women of the MCC to raise funds for the Skills Through Sport- Education & Leadership for Newly Arrived Mothers program.

The Woman of the MCC functions raise the vital funds and awareness of the program, to assist newly arrived mothers from culturally and linguistically diverse communities in gaining the valuable life skills require to gain confidence and connectivity within the wider Australian community.

Funds raised assist in the ongoing delivery of a series of leadership training sessions, educational tours and practical mentoring, that will enable culturally and linguistically diverse women to have greater understanding and confidence in supporting their families to access local sporting clubs and mainstream sporting communities.

The OnSide Victoria program, Skills Through Sport- Education & Leadership for Newly Arrived Mothers program is an important step in helping these women to join the mainstream community by alleviating the barrier to participation that will have positive impact on their lifestyle and sense of belonging within the community, promoting a positive change, not only directly through their own children, but consequently the extended family and the wider community.

Harmony Day

Sunday 21 March Diversity Cup

Former Australian Socceroo Captain, Alan Davidson, was OnSide for Harmony Day 2010.

Former Australian Soccer Captain, Alan Davidson joined the Harmony Day Diversity Cup defending champions, the Victoria Police Soccer Club (VPSC) who took on regional Victorian team, Cobram FC, to ‘kick-off’ the OnSide Victoria supported 2010 Diversity Cup.

The Diversity Cup, like Harmony Day, exemplifies a sense of belonging for everyone by helping communities work towards a spirit of inclusiveness and a shared identity as Australians, and portrays the benefits of living in a culturally diverse society.

The Diversity Cup has been an integral part of OnSide Victoria’s strategy for the past couple of years to engage the diverse community in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Port Melbourne’s Soccer Club hosted the match on 21 March, 2010. Both teams displayed an array of talented football skills, determination and teamwork on the day in front of an excited crowd.

Spheres of Influence International’s own Jason Nowakowski stood his ground in the central midfield against former FFV Premier League opponent Evo Madeira. The heated match came to a conclusion with Cobram Soccer Club taking the title for 2010. The match was a perfect example of cultural communities working together to demonstrate community harmony.

Sunday 14 March GameOn 2010

The OnSide Victoria Board launched into Harmony Day in conjunction with the City of Greater Dandenong to engage over 200 local residents from a diverse range of local communities at GameOn 2010.

Residents experienced a vast variety of sports in Hemmings Park on Sunday 14 March, 2010. The event proudly supported by the State Government of Victoria Planning & Community Development, VicHealth, OnSide Victoria, Leisure Link Up, VicHealth and Springvale Community Aid & Advice Bureau aims to connect communities through active community participation.

Since the event’s inception by OnSide Victoria, the now annual event hosts an array of sporting clinics facilitated by local, State and National Sporting Associations and community groups.

Each year the event grows stronger. The State Sporting Associations boasted more than 600 local multicultural youth who participated in sports ranging from basketball, soccer, baseball, touch rugby, tennis and skateboarding.

Each sport was associated and facilitated by a local or state sporting organisation including the Football Federation of Victoria, Tennis Australia and the Dandenong ‘Angels’ Baseball Club to ensure youth understood the significance of participating in sports.

Code One Police Band rocked the crowd to beat of the latest top forty music, whilst local multicultural groups recitals, including a display of the ‘Hakka’, embracing the very essence of belonging within a diverse community.

GameOn 2010 is held in the week leading into Harmony Day (March 21) to celebrate and raise awareness to the importance of youth and the multicultural diversity within Australian society.
